Add a calendar event from a screenshot in iOS 26 (and what to do when it doesn't work)
Since iOS 26, iPhones with Apple Intelligence can turn a screenshot into a calendar event with Visual Intelligence. Apple's iOS 27 guide describes the same steps. This guide covers how it works, which iPhones support it, where it falls short, and what to use when it does.

The 20-second version
- 1
Take a screenshot of the event
Open the email, chat, post, or web page so the date, time, and place are on screen. Press the side button and the volume up button at the same time.
- 2
Tap Add to Calendar
Visual Intelligence shows its tools at the bottom of the screenshot. The tools depend on what it recognizes; if it finds an event, one of them is Add to Calendar.
- 3
Check the event before you create it
Tap Edit and compare the title, date, year, start and end time, and location with the screenshot. Fix anything wrong, then tap Done.
- 4
Create the event and close
Create the event, then tap Close to delete the screenshot or the Selected button to keep it.
For a paper poster, you can use the camera instead. Open Visual Intelligence with the Camera Control, or on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16e, and iPhone 17e with the Action button, a Lock Screen control, or Control Center. Point it at a poster or flyer with a date in the future, tap Add to Calendar, then Create Event. Apple's Visual Intelligence guide.
Which iPhones can do this
Visual Intelligence is part of Apple Intelligence, so you need all three of these:
- A supported iPhone: iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or an iPhone 16 model or later, including iPhone 16e, iPhone 17e, and iPhone Air. iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, and older models are not supported.
- Apple Intelligence turned on: go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri. Apple's steps.
- A supported language: your device language and Siri language must be set to the same supported language, such as English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, or Chinese. Some features are not available in every region, and Apple Intelligence does not currently work on devices bought in mainland China.
Apple keeps the full list of devices, languages, and regions in How to get Apple Intelligence. Apple also recommends the latest version of iOS for the newest features.
What it reads well and what it misses
Apple's example is a flyer or invite. Its guide notes that Apple Intelligence uses generative models, that outputs may vary, and that you should check important information. We have not published device tests of this feature, so the table sticks to what Apple documents and what to check for each kind of screenshot.
| Screenshot | What Apple documents | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Event poster or flyer | Apple’s own example: turning a flyer or invite into a calendar event. | A missing year, and doors vs. start time. |
| Instagram story or post | Not mentioned specifically. | Stylized text over a photo, and dates like “this Friday”. |
| Chat message | Not mentioned specifically. | “Tomorrow” or “next week”, which depend on when the message was sent. |
| Email invitation | Covered by “invite” in Apple’s description. | The time zone, if the sender is somewhere else. |
| Work roster with many shifts | Apple describes creating a calendar event, not several from one image. | How many events you get, and night shifts that end the next day. |
| Flight confirmation | Not mentioned specifically. | Departure and arrival times are local to each airport. |
The same ambiguities trip up every tool. Our guide to extracting calendar events from an image explains why.
Known limits
What Apple's documentation says, and what it leaves out:
- The tools at the bottom of the screen depend on the screenshot. Add to Calendar only appears when Visual Intelligence finds an event.
- With the camera, Apple describes a poster or flyer that contains a date in the future.
- The event goes to the Calendar app. New events are added to your default calendar; you can move an event to another calendar afterward. Apple's Calendar settings.
- Apple's guide describes creating a calendar event. It does not describe creating several events from one screenshot, adding a repeat rule, or exporting an .ics file.
Troubleshooting
“Add to Calendar” does not appear
- Unsupported iPhone: check your model against the list above.
- Apple Intelligence is off or not ready: check Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri. If you just changed the Siri language, Apple says Apple Intelligence can be unavailable until the new language has downloaded.
- Languages do not match: set the device language and Siri language to the same supported language.
- The date is hard to read: zoom in so the date, time, and place fill the screen, then take a new screenshot.
- Camera on a poster: Apple's steps need a date in the future.
The event is in the wrong calendar
Go to Settings > Apps > Calendar > Default Calendar and choose the right one. Open the event to move it.
The date or time is wrong
Tap Edit before you create the event, and compare the weekday with the date. Check the year if the screenshot does not show one.
Alternatives when you need more
For a single event on a supported iPhone, start with the built-in option. Look elsewhere for a whole schedule, an older iPhone, or a file for another calendar.
| Tool | Several events from one image | .ics export | Review step | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Visual Intelligence (iOS 26) | Not described by Apple | Not described by Apple | Edit before you create the event | Built in on supported iPhones |
| Google Gemini | Lists them in its answer | Adds to Google Calendar instead (connection on) | Check what it filled in | Free tier available |
| ChatGPT | Lists them in its answer | Text answer only | You type each event yourself | Free tier available |
| Photo2Calendar | One draft per event | Yes, for Google Calendar or Outlook | Every field shown before saving | Free download, plans in the app |
Gemini can create a Google Calendar event when the Calendar connection is on. How Gemini works with Google Calendar. With ChatGPT, the answer is text and you add each event by hand.
Photo2Calendar reads screenshots and photos of paper, creates one draft per event, and shows each field for you to check before anything is saved. Frequently asked questions
Does iOS 26 add events from screenshots automatically?
Not on its own. You take the screenshot, tap Add to Calendar in the Visual Intelligence tools, and create the event. You can edit it first, which is worth doing for the date and year.
Can I do this on iPhone 14?
No. Visual Intelligence needs Apple Intelligence, which Apple lists for iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later. On an iPhone 14 you can use Live Text to copy the date, or an app that reads the screenshot.
Does it work with Google Calendar?
Yes, if your Google account is added to the iPhone Calendar app. New events go to your default calendar, which you set in Settings > Apps > Calendar > Default Calendar. You can also move an event to another calendar after creating it.
Can it add several events at once?
Apple’s documentation describes creating a calendar event from a screenshot. It does not describe several events from one image, such as a roster. For schedules, use a tool that creates one draft per event and count the drafts against the rows.
Is the screenshot stored?
When you finish, Apple’s guide says you can tap Close to delete the screenshot or the Selected button to save it. If you use Photo2Calendar instead, the image is sent to our backend for processing; see the privacy notice for details.
Why is the date wrong?
Usually because the screenshot leaves something out: no year, “tomorrow” in a chat, a time without am or pm, or a time zone. Apple notes that Apple Intelligence outputs may vary and asks you to check important information, so edit the event before you create it.
